In Guatemala during the years
1980-1984, the National Army used a scorched-earth strategy
with the goal of destroying the social, cultural, and
economic bases of the population, in particular that of the
indigenous community.
As with other areas of Guatemala, Rabinal was the scene of
many terrible massacres during that four year period, which
resulted in thousands of deaths (between 4000 to 5000
according to the estimates). Those deaths resulted in a loss
of 20% of the population, left thousands of widows and
unprotected orphans without resources to survive, and tore
the social fabric of the community. The majority of the
victims were members of the village Maya Achí, who lost
their fundamental rights during the carrying out of this
true genocide.
Out of this terrible violence, through
the courage of the survivors, was born ADIVIMA.
